1,000 Books Before Kindergarten

Ongoing Program

The 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten ongoing program encourages you to read 1,000 books to your child before he or she enters kindergarten. Just read three books a day for one year and it will add up to over 1,000 books! Stop by Youth Services to register your child and pick up a reading log! (R)

September is National Library Card Sign-up Month! As students head back to school this September, we encourage parents to visit the library and make sure their children and teens sign-up for the most important school supply of all--a library card. Be sure to enter for a chance to win a restaurant gift card when you check out your books at the Circulation Department.

 

Book Buzz (Ages 8 and up)

Thursday, September 8 • 4:00 p.m.

What's the buzz on books? Find out at this newly redesigned book club! Discuss books and graphic novels by sharing books that you have read over the past month or books that you love and want to share with others. A suggested list will be provided each month based on a theme or genre, but you do not have to read what is on the list. Lists will be at the youth reference desk as well as at each meeting. (R)

 

Lego Robotics: Drumming Monkey (Ages 9-14)

Wednesday, September 14 • 4:00 p.m. in the Computer Room

With our WeDo Lego Construction Sets and software, you will be able to build and program your project. (R)

 

Squirrel and Friends (Ages 3-6)

Wednesday, September 14 • 6:00 p.m.

Come for a few furry tales and a craft with Squirrel and some of his friends from the forest. (R)

 

Kids Movie Night (All Ages)

Thursday, September 15 • 6:00 p.m.

We provide the popcorn! You may bring your own beverage and snack. Movies are shown on a larger screen in the Meeting Room. (NR)

 

Paws to Read (All Ages)

Saturday, September 17 • 11:00 a.m.

Holly Collie, our library dog, and K-9 Star and Officer Terry will be here to listen to you read. Reading to a dog is a great way to make friends with a special canine and increase your reading skills. Read or make up a story. Bring a favorite book to read or choose one that we will provide. Panera Storytime (Ages 0-6)

Join us for stories, milk and cookies at Panera Bread in Round Lake Beach on Rollins Road. (NR)

 

Lego Robotics: Flying Bird (Ages 9-14)

Wednesday, September 21 • 4:00 p.m. in the Computer Room

With our WeDo Lego Construction Sets and software, you will be able to build and program your project. You must have done the Dancing Birds, Smart Spinner and Drumming Monkey projects to be able to do this program. (R)

 

Shapes We Eat - Bilingual Storytime! (Ages 3-7)

Wednesday, September 24 • 1:00 p.m.

Join us for stories and songs about food in both English and Spanish, a fun craft, and a treat! (R)

 

Baby and Me (Ages 6-24 months)

Tuesday, September 27 • 9:30 a.m.

This is a special library time to share stories, songs, rhymes and bounces. There will also be time after storytime for play and to talk to each other. (R)

 

Fall Fun (Ages 5-8)

Wednesday, September 28 • 6:00 p.m.

Come celebrate this fall program with stories and a craft. (R)

 

Sensory Friendly Movie Night (All Ages)

Thursday, September 29 • 6:00 p.m.

Join us for a sensory friendly movie. The lights will be dimmed and the sound will be lowered. Popcorn will be served but feel free to bring your own snack as well as other comfort items. This program is designed for children with special needs. All attendees must be accompanied by an adult-caregiver. The event will take place in the meeting room. (NR)

Mexican Sugar Skulls (Ages 7 and up)

Saturday, October 1 • 10:00 a.m.

Enjoy this seasonal drawing workshop with art teacher, Christine Thornton. All art supplies will be provided. In the Meeting Room. (R)

Join us as we learn about animals that hibernate and trees that change color in the fall. A seasonal craft will be part of this session along with mini pumpkins to take home. (R)

What a great way to spend the afternoon! We will have lots of Lego's for you to build most anything your imagination will allow. (NR)

Miss Jamie's Farm (Ages 0-8)

Saturday, October 22 • 1:00 p.m.

Miss Jamie and her puppet friends from the farm take the audience on a magical barnyard adventure in a sing-along, dance-along show that's fun for kids and grown-ups alike. (R)

Drop-In and Get Crafty: Halloween (All Ages)

Friday, October 28 • 1:00 - 3:00 p.m.

Enjoy your day off of school by stopping in the Activity Room to create your own Halloween-themed craft! (NR)

 

Day of the Dead - Bilingual Storytime! (Ages 3-7)

Join us to learn about and celebrate the Day of the Dead with stories, songs, and a fun craft! (R)

Join us for a lively discussion about great graphic novels. This month, we will be discussing series graphic novels. Feel free to read a new series this month or share a series that you really enjoy with the group. (R)

 

Pokemon Night (All Ages) in the Meeting Room

Thursday, November 10 • 6:00 p.m.

Come in to watch a movie. While you are here, bring your DS, 2DS, or 3DS to play your Pokemon games against others or even bring in your Pokemon cards to play or showoff. (NR)

 

Drop-In and Get Crafty: Thanksgiving (All Ages)

Friday, November 11 • 1:00 p.m.

Enjoy your day off of school by stopping in the Activity Room to create your own Thanksgiving themed craft! (NR)

 

Minecraft Selfies: A Collage Workshop (Ages 7 and up) in Meeting Room

Saturday, November 12 • 1:00 p.m.

More Minecraft art programming by popular request! Art teacher, Christine Thornton, will teach you how to make a Minecraft-themed self-portrait. We'll use scissors, paper and glue to simulate pixels and capture your unique look. (R)

 

Ozobot Time! (Ages 5-7)

Tuesday, November 15 • 4:00 p.m.

This little robot does some awesome things! You draw out the commands and it will do what you tell it to do. Come and experiment with programming your Ozobot! (R)

Come join us for a day of gaming fun, from board games to video games. Libraries all around the United States will be participating in the International Games Day event that happens once a year. So join in the fun. (NR)

This storytime will engage children through stories, movement and music. The non-traditional storytime format is designed for children who have autism, difficulties with sensory processing, or simply sitting still. (R)
